My name is Deborah Wingfield (Debs!) AKA Costumes By Deborah! I thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself and give you some small insight on what has inspired me and why I am so passionate about costume construction and design…
From a young age, I was inquisitive about creativity. My late grandmother initially influenced me as she taught me how to sew/knit at 8 years old, and I didn't stop there. I learned that creativity is what the imagination can make possible with just a simple fabric and thread. I have adapted this mindset in many areas of my life and honestly believe that anything is possible positively. Growing up, I was fascinated by the ability of specific colours to express emotions. I enjoyed experimenting with styles to create a unique look. In my younger college years, my interests were always in fashion trends, not just following them but creating versions that would stand out and make others think wow. Starting with a concept and a blank piece of paper and interpreting my ideas most naturally helps me express myself. I aspired to be a designer but took a long break in my creative education. In the meantime, beginning a family and using my skills in other ways kept the creative spark going (I was also very proud to have made my own wedding dress). With the support of the people around me, admiring my creative projects gave me the confidence to take a leap of faith and return to education. With more of a costume approach over the past 5 years of studying, I have increased an incredible drive to see where the future will take me next.
I am an experienced seamstress; I have been sewing for over 30 years. During my time studying in collaboration with The Royal Opera House, I learned to appreciate that it's the details that make a difference and I am always committed to providing the perfect outcome every time. From bespoke costume design to construction or customisation, I can create costumes for any performance.
I can undertake any challenges, whether it's alterations for a dance costume or something created for the theatre or even carnivals! I can also adapt costumes for quick changes.
I'm friendly and approachable. If you need some help with a costume, contact me today for more information.
Based in Kent, I work with clients in Essex and Across London.
